Fishing Story
I went fishing this morning but after a short time
I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth
with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait.
Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog
in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head,
took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.
Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without
getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniel's
and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes
rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the
lake without incident and carried on fishing using
the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot.
It was that snake, with two more frogs.

Alabama Vacation
We spent four days near Birmingham, Alabama this past weekend. It was for a family reunion and as usual, I was schlepping my camera everywhere. There are two galleries this time. The first is a very short collection of my favorite images from the more than 680 shots. The second is a much larger gallery showing some scenes from the only complete iron furnace museum in the United States. It's called the Sloss Furnaces and is well worth the visit if you're in the Birmingham area.

Nine Months Later
Jack decided to go skiing with his buddy, Bob.
So they loaded up Jack's minivan and headed north.
After driving for a few hours, they got caught in a terrible blizzard.
They pulled into a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered the door if they could spend the night.
'I realize its terrible weather out there and I have this huge house all to myself, but I'm recently widowed,' she explained. 'I'm afraid the neighborswill talk if I let you stay in my house.'
'Don't worry,' Jack said. 'We'll be happy to sleep in the barn, and if the weather breaks, we'll be gone at first light. 'The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the night.
Come morning, the weather had cleared, and they got on their way.
They enjoyed a great weekend of skiing.
But about nine months later, Jack got anunexpected letter from an attorney.
It took him a few minutes to figure it out, but he finally determined that it was from the attorney ofthat attractive widow he had met on the ski weekend.
He dropped in on his friend Bob and asked, 'Bob, do you remember that good-looking widow from the farm we stayed at on our ski holiday up north about 9 months ago?'
'Yes, I do.' said Bob
'Did you, er, happen to get up in the middle of the night, go up to the house and pay her a visit?'
'Well, um, yes!,' Bob said, a little embarrassed about being found out, 'I have to admit that I did.'
'And did you happen to give her my name insteadof telling her your name?'
Bob's face turned beet red and he said, 'Yeah, look, I'm sorry, buddy, I'm afraid I did.' 'Why do you ask?'
'She just died and left me everything.'

The 150th Anniversary
October 24, 1861, 150 years ago today, the first transcontinental telegraph line was completed.
The first message sent over this predecessor of the Internet was:
TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES:
IN THE TEMPORARY ABSENSE OF THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE I AM REQUESTED TO SEND YOU THE FIRST MESSAGE WHICH WILL BE TRANSMITTED OVER THE WIRES OF THE TELEGRAPH LINE WHICH CONNECTS THE PACIFIC WITH THE ATLANTIC STATES. THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA DESIRE TO CONGRATULATE YOU UPON THE COMPLETION OF THE GREAT WORK. THEY BELIEVE THAT IT WILL BE THE MEANS OF STRENGTHENING THE ATTACHMENT WHICH BINDS BOTH THE EAST AND THE WEST TO THE UNION, AND THEY DESIRE IN THIS--THE FIRST MESSAGE ACROSS THE CONTINENT--TO EXPRESS THEIR LOYALTY TO THE UNION AND THEIR DETERMINATION TO STAND BY ITS GOVERNMENT ON THIS ITS DAY OF TRIAL. THEY REGARD THAT GOVERNMENT WITH AFFECTION AND WILL ADHERE TO IT UNDER ALL FORTUNES.
STEPHEN J. FIELD
CHIEF JUSTICE OF CALIFORNIA
